review 1: Le héros de ce court roman est un sexagénaire, acteur renommé de théâtre, qui a soudain perdu confiance, son talent. Ses questionnements, un séjour en hôpital psychiatrique ou diverses rencontres parviendront-ils à le retaper, le ramener sur le devant de la scène ? Je n'ai pas été spécialement conquis par cet ouvrage ; ni par le style ni par les situations qui se déroulent et qui m'ont paru tantôt superficielles, tantôt forcées.
review 2: I should read more Roth, perhaps something earlier in what appears to be a more than prolific career, but this particular work did not move me. Though economical and clear, it is perhaps too clear for its subject, perhaps too transparent, so that the complexities of human nature and motivations pass the reade
... morer right by. Though the premise is solid and has potential to be wildly interesting, the book moves along in a predictable manner that leaves little to provoke the reader. There is not enough for me to grasp onto, to identify with Axler and feel pity, or anger, or disgust, or confusion. Perhaps that is Roth's goal, but I do not necessarily find it a desirable one. less
