review 1: FUCKING TERRIBLE! Really this book disgraces the female gender. I grabbed this book because the storyline piqued my interest and even after reading multiple reviews that rated the book poorly, I still gave it a chance. It greatly disappointed me when I read this book; I couldn't even finish the damn thing! The characters were shallow and did not seem realistic at all. It seemed like the author was trying to tell the readers that all females will lie, betray, and ditch the people closest to them in order to achieve their "greatest goal in life", a boyfriend. I know some people are actually like this but the book claims that every freaking person on Earth, well in Ashland, is desperate to have a boy/girlfriend! Really, this book is not worth your time unless you want to read... more a shallow story with 1-dimensional characters and a false depiction of women.
review 2: Full disclosure - the author is my neighbor. That aside, I found The Break-Up Artist to be witty and insightful, snarky and yet likable. Addressing the difficulties of maintaining childhood friendships through the transition to young-adulthood, it has all the intrigue of high school relationships with some important life lessons woven in for substance. This is one of those "buy it for the middle- or high school student in your life but you'll want to borrow it right back" kind of books. less
