review 1: Hoose, P. (2009). Claudetter Colvin: Twice Toward Justice. New York: Macmillan.Sibert Honor 2010InformationalThis book is about a young African American girl who refused to give her seat up on the bus. The surprising aspect; it wasn't Rosa Parks. Claudette Colvin was a pregnant 15 year old girl who one day on a bus refused to give her seat up to a white woman, 9 months before Rosa Parks. This obviously was during the Civil Right Movement. Unlike Rosa Parks, Claudette was not viewed as a hero for her actions. This book takes a look into that and court cases during that time period. This book would be great to use in the classroom to teach more about the Civil Rights Movement and to shed light to those who were not recognized for their heroic actions.

Category: Newbery Newbery Honor 2010, National Book Award for Young People's Literature (2009), School Library Journal Best Book of the Year (2009), Sibert Honor (2010)School Library Journal 2009While Rosa Parks is such a well-known figure in history fighting for civil Rights less knows is Claudette Colvin. The book celebrates Claudette Colvin a teenager that in 1955 rebelled against the segregation rules imposed at the time such as sitting in the black segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. The book definitely makes justice to this character in history who is well worth knowing. The visual elements for example the book cover with Claudette Colvin with a background of bright colors is definitely very powerful. The book is recommended for students grades 7th and up and a great activity would be to create a timeline where students could identify the lives of personalities that fought for Civil Rights. This book is a great read as it explores a character so strong, so determined. less
