review 1: This book is about an extraordinary bird that people call the moon bird. The moon bird is called this because he has flown the distance of the moon and halfway back in his lifetime. Moon bird is a rufa red knot (population of rufa red knots that died is at 80%). Moon bird is approximately 20 years of age and is a little bird. Moon bird travels in Febraury with his flock from Tierra del Fuego (which is the breeding ground) to the Canadian Arctic, which is about 9000 miles away. Then during the later months of the summer moon bird makes the return trip. After completing this book I was shocked with the life of this bird. It was truly amazing that this creature has withstood so much and survived for 20 years. This book could be used in the classroom before a unit on birds. St... moreudents could use this book as an inspiration to write a book report on a different type of bird.
review 2: I am so happy to have read this book! I think it's the first nonfiction book in which I had to turn to the last pages to see how it ended. The story is about the extraordinary rufa red knot shorebird, B95, and his incredible annual migratory circuit. This amazing 4 oz. bird flies roughly 18,000 miles a year from Patagonia to the Arctic and back! He is estimated to be 20-years-old which means, in his lifetime, he has flown around 325,000 miles (the distance to the moon and halfway back); hence, giving him his nickname:"Moonbird". This is a fantastic book about ecosystems, conservation, extinction, and the truly delicate balance of nature. I actually learned a lot from reading it! less

Love this book! It's actually classified as juvenile nonfiction but don't let that put you off.

More like 4 1/2 stars. Loved it. Information packed, but not overwhelming. Great narrative.
