review 1: After Reading "This Case Will Kill Me," Bornikova's first book, I was delighted to find this sequel. Her main character is interesting, as is the setting, a current era variation on the trope of Vampires, Werewolves and Elves exist among us. The Powers here revealed themselves in the 1980s, and Linnet was fostered in a Vampire household. She is now a young lawyer, in a Vampire lead law firm. This book is about the stresses on actors and producers in Hollywood where Elves frequently get all the best parts. Are they using glamour to do so. Clever premise and well explored.Book in the series and I'm ready for the next albeit it is not ready for me. The story is tight, characters well drawn and always the twist and surprises. The editing could be better.
review 2:
... moreA paranormal mystery about finding common ground, working together, fair competition (natural abilities vs. magic), and how you define human. I love Linnet’s honesty, curiosity, optimism, and determination to find the truth and do the right thing. She is a trouble magnet but seems to make friends everywhere. I just hope she doesn’t come to rely too much on her incredible luck! The unanswered questions about Álfar John O’Shea, the vampire David, the horse Vento, and Linnet’s luck really held my attention. less
