review 1: This book was actually in the 'damaged' bin at my favourite bookshop and the owner drew my attention to it as something he thought I might like. He was right!An interesting, thought provoking translation of a series of wonderful (and typically French) points of view of a series of events. on the surface, a lovely light storyline about an unusually bad storm and how the community on one street experiences it.I loved the way that complex events are distilled and presented through the main narrator's childish selfishness, and while everything manages to wrap up in one big happy ending, I wasn't overcome with my usual cynical reaction. I felt light and engaged while reading this one, and have taken that same sense of wellbeing away with me after finishing it.Definitely one to ... morelook out for, especially if you liked The Incredible Sadness of Lemon Cake.
review 2: What a lovely story. Definitely put a smile on my face. There's a scene in page 181 that's just priceless - I could just see it in a movie scene. The backdrop is the Ice Storm in Montreal in January 1998. Basically, the premise is that in a natural disaster, people will pull together to survive. In this case, the story "showcases" various characters and how this one event can bring people back to themselves, so to speak. Some call it a fairy tale, at least it's a good one! less
