review 1: This has a cynical, brittle, world-weary tone that seems very typical of the 20s and 30s. The obvious explanation would be that it was the psychological impact of the Great War… which seems plausible. It’s a fairly dark view of human nature: lustful, jealous, manipulative, untrustworthy, superficial, pleasure-seeking; but it makes for an entertaining read. All the sex and drugs must have been rather shocking at the time, and the Catholic Church apparently put the book on its banned list, but it’s not actually very explicit.I’m glad I didn’t read the afterword until afterwards, because it turns out that ‘Pitigrilli’ was a pretty unpleasant human being, which doesn’t make the book any better or worse but might have lessened my enjoyment o... moref it.
review 2: I didn't like the book. I only enjoyed the parts when Titu was high and would go on and on about God and His creation and some small parts like when his friend, the waiter, told Titu how waiters spit in people's food because they need to feel superior. Well... I didn't like it that much when I thought that that could happen in the real world too.I thought it was kind of unrealistic here and there. Like when Titu sniffed coke for the first time. He sniffed a double dose and considering that he hadn't done it before, he should have been knocked out but instead he was just fine. Also, he wasn't fired from the newspaper even if the director knew what he had done (spreading false information about that execution and then about that meat producer) but instead, he received the usual paycheck under the condition that he stayed away from the paper. I mean what was all that about? Did he blackmail them with something or what? And when he wrote the article about Maud being this great dancer, nobody checked it before it was published, even though they knew Titu wasn't supposed to write again. I mean, isn't there always supposed to be someone who gathers all the articles, double-checks them and then gives them for printing? You can't just publish whatever you want. I also didn't like how in the second half of the book, the narrator keeps calling Maud by the name of Kokain. I know the analogy but was that really necessary? It sounded so lame...Anyways, I don't recommend the book to anyone, even if the woman you rented the apartment from had it among some other bunch of books that you planned to read. less
