review 1: The Journey Back started out slow. At times I was not sure where it was going. The whole story centered around Digger and his journey back to find possible redemption from his misfortunes in Red Kayak. But like Red Kayak, Cummings did it again. She had wrapped the reader into a heartfelt story about Digger and his journey back. This was an excellent book, and it leaves the reader wanting more. I definitely want another follow up book about Digger and his friends from both The Journey Back and Red Kayak. The book was wonderful - a definite must read over and over!
review 2: The Journey back was an okay book to me. It had different settings, well structured characters, and an interesting conflict. However, I feel it lacked a little something extra, I jus
... moret couldn't relate to it at all. That might just be me, but besides that it was very well written. Since this could technicaly be considered a sequel to The Red Kayak I would suggest reading that book first, just to get used to the characters. The Red Kayak which is a prequel to this book was about these three friends who live near a lake and two of the boys commit a serious crime which they didn't inntend to happen at all and they get sent to a juvinile detention center for nine months. In The Journey Back it follows one of the boys who commited this crime and his escape from the Juvinile detention center. He is determined to escape to go back home to protect his mother and two young siblings from his obusive father. During his escape he runs into multiple problems. These problems include stealing an eighteen-weeler truck, a canoe, and a bicycle, Going down a dam in that same canoe, and battling the elements with close to no food or anything for days. However his conflicts aren't all bad because he becomes friends with this outstanding stray dog, and at his weakest point he stumbles upon a campsite. At this campsite he meets this amazing little boy and his mysterious father which take him under their wing until he starts to feel better. Also he meets the 'girl of his dreams' and gets a job earning real money. However this campsite turns out to be to good to be true. I would recomend this book to someone who likes action, adventure, and escape stories. Also it would be good if you like realistic fiction in modern times. If you read The Red Kayak and liked it this would also be a good book for you to read. Overall I did like the book as a whole but I wouldn't say it was one of my favorites. less
