review 1: I devoured this book in just 6 days, walking down the street and reading at the same time, glued firmly to this thrilling historical account. It never once dragged for me (though I do have more than just a casual interest in art heists), and despite the wealth of information presented it never felt like I was reading non-fiction. Scotti does a brilliant job of weaving so many rich details, from Leonardo di Vinci's early life to Napoleon's reign even up to the era of yellow journalism, so vital to understanding the heist itself and all the major players, without once wandering off course or veering towards boring. "Vanished Smile" is meticulously researched and beautifully written. I was sad to finish it, but could not put it down.
review 2: On August 21, 1911,
... morethe Mona Lisa vanished from the Louvre. Since the theft was not discovered until the next day, the trail was already old by the time the police began investigating. As French detectives scrambled to assemble a list of suspects, the public became frenzied as they mourned the loss of a beloved icon. As one of the most perplexing and audacious art thefts unfolds, this nonfiction account of the crime combines meticulous historical research with a readable and thrill packed cast of characters and events. less
