review 1: Torn between four and five stars, my uncertainty about how realistic this book is probably reflects my own fears of the broader world. The title, "Being Emily," is wonderful, capturing that gender is a matter of being and not becoming. The depiction of the depression, turmoil, and anger of a transgender youth's teen years is spot on as well as the relief provided by some gender expression. When the teen comes out, the outright hostility of some characters seems accurate. But I'm not so certain about the almost immediate acceptance and almost unwavering support of some other characters: they seem, frankly, too good to be true, particularly in the community described. Then again, this is a young adult novel, and perhaps it is meant to send a message to young people abou... moret the way the world should be, and the way they should make it, rather than the way it is. I hope I'm wrong, and the book is simply realistic.
review 2: This book took forever to get going. Absolutely nothing going on until 4/5ths of the book. Just mindless details about everyday life, no climax, no plot til the very end. I would like to have read about the changes that took place to Emily, it was way too wrapped up in the book, like the author got sick of writing the story and just literally summed it all up in the end. I am not a fan of this book at all, great idea about not judging transexuals and we see their point of view, but absolutely no excitement whatsoever. I guess you could say it is boring. less
