review 1: In some ways, I really appreciate what Evans has done in completing this project and in others, I really don't. Following specifically selected guidelines from the bible so methodically and dispassionately seems, to me, just about the most secular thing you can do. So, in a lot of ways, I think this book really misses its mark. Not the most original of projects either. On the plus side, Evans is a great writer and I really enjoyed her humor.
review 2: I'll start by saying that I've read and enjoyed a number of Rachel's blogs, so this book was something I was really hoping to enjoy. Although I agree with her on many points regarding "biblical womanhood", her storytelling of her year of living according to various statements from the Bible about women didn't
... morehumor me. It all felt snarky, bloggy, very introspective, and crowd-sourced. I found myself speeding through her stories to get to the parts where she offered some thoughtful review and discussion on a particular subject, and when she actually did, I didn't mind. I had higher hopes and I guess I expected a more scholarly and thoughtful discussion since I'm really interested in this subject. It left me a bit bored, so I can't really recommend it to anyone. less
