Avalon: Web of Magic
review 1: The Avalon: Web of Magic series is an old favorite of mine, and I recently went back and re-read the first book. At this point, I'm well outside the target age group (probably along with everyone else who's followed the series start to finish, given all the publishing switches), but these books are still fun, light reads. They can seem a bit too sugary sweet (ie. LOTS of glitter, rainbows, and unicorns) at times. However, the characters (human, animal, and otherwise) are definitely fun, and the three protagonists (Adriane, Kara, Emily) are nicely complex - flawed yet likeable, making it worthwhile to follow along as they develop over the course of the series and allowing for some genuinely emotional storylines. This first book does a good job of setting up the rest, introdu... morecing the main characters, their mission, and exploring some of the magical rules/worlds/animals. The focus is mostly on Emily, the compassionate, sensitive healer, as she settles into a new hometown and gets caught up in the mystery of why odd, injured animals are showing up in the nearby ravenswood preserve. Overall, I would definitely recommend this series to young readers who like fantasy/animal-centric stories. I'll be continuing my re-read - and I might have to check out the newer editions. The artwork looks beautiful, and the covers have a nice "collectible" vibe. :)
review 2: 10/10I first read this wonderful book 5 years ago, and it is still my absolute favorite series ever! This is a very fun and entertaining fantasy series, and after only reading this book I got pretty obsessed with it. A great thing about this book is that it is one of those that is really great for all ages. Young children will like it, teenagers will like it, and adults will like it. I made my dad read these books, he hates reading and even he liked these! I can't wait until the movie comes out next year, I've been waiting for it FOREVER!So this book is about a pretty normal girl named Emily Fletcher, who loves animals. She has just moved to a town called Stonehill, Pennsylvania, where there is a wildlife preserve. She meets a girl named Adriane, who is known for being the weird girl nobody likes, and a very hungry ferret named Ozzie who is actually an elf. They become friends and find out that they are mages and have to find Avalon, the home of all magic. There is also another girl named Kara, who doesn't actually become a mage in this book, who is the popular blond one that they both are very annoyed by, but then they all become friends. I'd go into more detail but then this review would be way to long. Overall, it is an amazing start to a great series. less
