review 1: This 1-star rating is admittedly harsh but the author's excellent evocative writing skills when it comes to describing places and people cannot make up for the fact that I found the plot and the depiction of the interactions and dialogues within haphazard, self-indulgent and forced. As many people have said, this would have been a better read had its structure and intent been a travelogue of some sort; as a novel, I'm afraid it falls short.
review 2: I finished reading The Sly Company of People Who Care. This was such a good book. If you want to get a glimpse into Guyanese life and culture this is the book to read. As I read the book, I felt like I was wondering the streets of Guyana with him, speaking with the many characters and individuals he encounter along... more his travels. The author created a remarkable, accurate world, in a beautiful, forgotten land known as Guyana. less
