review 1: The story about the lovesick tiger is a gem -- funny, terrible, perfect. The rest of the stories don't hit that high, though. They feel promising, but not fully cooked. They are mostly first person narratives -- each one spiked with random quirks that don't necessarily add substance -- about doomed relationships. The narrator is usually deeply misguided about how the beloved thinks and feels, and that is the set-up for tragedy and humor. That set-up works brilliantly with the tiger story, but as the other stories slog on, it starts to get bleak.

... morevolved into just weird and troubling. The stories are short and most are engaging, but some are rather disturbing. We picked this book for my book club and a number of other participants had a hard time reading some of the stories - most didn't even finish the book. I appreciated the different perspectives on what could possibly constitute an executioner and the stories were well thought out and well written. Sometimes, however, it was just a bit much for my taste. less

While undoubtedly well written, I found the stories really disturbing and could not finish the book.

There were a few stories I liked but overall it was just an OK anthology for me.
