review 1: This is by far the BEST writing book I have read. What's so great about this book is it demystifies the publishing and writing world in a very personal and real way. Ingermanson helps the inexperienced writers find the tools to build their craft and get published. Also, I thought it was way cool that he includes other books for reference where he doesn't go into as much detail. AMAZING book, and a MUST read for any aspiring writer!
review 2: When this book first caught my eye I thought it was more specific to writing fiction, not a novel, which aren't necessarily the same things. However, it is a great beginner's guide. I am glad I bought it and to this day it remains on my bookshelf along with other books on writing. There's too much emphasis on being able to
... morepublish the manuscript you're writing, which I found distasteful, but it is the way the writing world works, so very understandable. There's another dummies book for writing a novel and publishing it, so it feels a little redundant to me. That said, it is a great addition to have. Especially in the beginning of your writing career. The first two chapters are chapters about a writer's life in general and skippable. And you can skip right to Chapter 3 if you're concerned about genre, audience and all that jazz. If you've read some other books on writing, you can skip over directly to Chapter 6, which begins with the Setting (which they call Story world, which is where the book really begins. If you're not yet looking to publish, but rather just out to get the gist and details of writing a manuscript, the last 4 chapters are unnecessary. But if you want to get a basic understanding of writing query letters, different kinds of agents and editors the publishing world has, it's a great first look. It's a highly recommended book, even though there tends to be a lot of repetition and a lot of superficial info. I feel like it there are so many wasted space, where they could have given so much better information, instead of repeating the same thing. But I digress. This book will give you a good basic understanding before you move onto some more serious books about writing. This definitely a good investment to make. less

Excellent. It was my introductory book on becoming an author. I still use it as a reference book.

It teaches you basically what you learned in school if you payed attention in literature.
