review 1: This is a must read for any aspiring beer geek. It provides an excellent introduction to a broad range of styles and a good amount of brewing history. It is for the person who enjoys beer as a beverage rather than as a numbing agent. The Oxford Companion to beer is a much more complete reference, but it's just that; a reference. Tasting Beer is more like a course lead by a passionate instructor who really knows the material. At times he is a bit too evangelical in his prose but the information he provides more than compensates. Be prepared to annoy waitresses (and probably your spouse). When the waiter asks what would you like to drink, the answer now takes on the form of something like - A Belgium-style dubble, with full hops but with an emphasis on the malts and a ... morebit of chewiness, an IBU of around 35, ABV of 7 or 8 with a heavier mouthfeel and a bit of a fruit or vanilla finish. Let the eye-rolls commence
review 2: I read this for a class I was taking, and found it to be quite an enjoyable textbook! There is a wealth of information in the book, and many excellent illustrations. The beer/food pairing section is especially good. My only complaint is that the book wasn't organized quite as well as I wish it had been...it seemed a little jumbled at times. Overall, quite an enjoyable and informative read, and WOW, does that guy love beer!! less
