review 1: Being a Beer geek, I'd give this book a 4 star rating, though for the casual fan I'd probably give it a 3. PROS: Informative and interesting overview of beer styles, food pairings, beer history. Especially enjoyed the recommendations for styles I was not familiar with. Good beer reference book. CONS: The chapters are well-written, but not very balanced. Some of the chapters are extremely technical, whilst others are quite generic. If anything, the book is too short.
review 2: This is an excellent book on the most complex beverage that exists. Mosher gives the history of the development of beer. He also gives a great description of the palate and how to recognize flavors (in food as well as in beer). The old “areas of the tongue flavor chart” that so many
... moreof us learned in school has been disproven for many years and the tongue is capable of so much more than “just detecting sour on one part of the tongue”… Mosher explains all of this very well. His chapter on pairing beer with food is worth the price of admission all by itself. I also love that he takes very seriously what it means to serve beer correctly… how to correctly pour a beer (with lots of head), the correct glass to serve each type of beer, correct temperature per beer-type, etc. Simply put: this is THE book to start with if you want to learn more about beer. less
