review 1: Pirate Penguin and Ninja Chicken are best friends and enemies, (sigh), and frenemies. They simultaneously love and hate each other- help one another and fight one another, try to kill one another and hug one another. This book is first a collection of short 1-page comics of their antics (ended with "thend" instead of "the end"). The second half of the book is a longer story-arc that features Ninja Chicken going to a Ninja Conference and Pirate Chicken going into outer space. The jargon in this book is distracting and sad- it makes me dislike the book in the same way I dislike "Captain Underpants" and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" for their misspelled words and excessive use of slang. (Example: "How dare you get penguin spit all up in my smoothie!" , "Whut" instead of "What", nonc... moreapitalization of names such as Gerald, "it's more faster", "Astronaut Armadillo sez: Hey kids! Eat your friggin' vegetables!", "Waitaminit", "OmyG", "wierd" (why not spell that correctly?!? plus, it IS spelled correctly elsewhere! editing?!), "you guyses", "txt", "TeeVee", etc, etc, etc.) I'm sure the kids love it- but it's not the sort of text that I hope children will be reading. It promoted breaking things and running away to avoid paying for them, violence as an answer to any problem (indeed, Penguin just shouts VIOLENCE when he is really angry), and chaos in general. Funny for adults? Yes. Appropriate for children? Perhaps not. It's like Internet Memes found their way into a book for children. Is it humorous for adults? Yes. Is it appropriate reading material for kids? Sigh. The kids will love it, for sure. But am I happy to recommend it to them? No. I don't believe you have to spell words incorrectly in order for kids to find your story appealing. If you cannot spell your words correctly AND tell a good story, then there is a problem.I gathered quite a bit of insight into this author's style when I read that he is 23. Ah, that explains some things- he is still pretty childish, probably does not have kids of his own, and probably does not think about the consequences of promoting meme-inspired comics to small children. Perhaps in 20 years when he has been publishing comics for a while, and has children of his own, he will think twice about the wisdom of that.At one point, a giant evil gila monster has a headache so he says, "I'll just take some aspirin" and eats a hospital. This was humorous. Actually, lots of this book was humorous for me- because I already know how to spell and speak (mostly) properly. But for children learning their words and grammar? Probably not a great influence. Also, there is a Cosmonaut Capybara which is a little saddening- capybaras (and guinea pigs) are always supposed to be cute and cuddly. That's just my personal preference. All in all, this graphic novel is cute for adults, but not my favorite for children.
review 2: I did not personally love this comic, finding it kind of silly and pointless. BUT--- I think young readers (BOYS especially!) who loved Captain Underpants will think it is hilarious. And a few times I was surprised to find myself actually laughing; who can resist Pirate Penguin complaining about the contents of the fridge: "All I see is raw vegetables and ingredient-type thingies. No actual FOOD food." or Ninja Chicken's creepy squid roommate (at the Ninja Convention, naturally) saying: "I've set the microwave on fire, so we can make smores!" Reading the author bio cartoon at the end also reminded me that Ray Friesen is only 23 years old! So, obviously he is way more in touch with what kids will find humorous than I am. less
