review 1: This book had potential. The only reason I kept reading is because I was interested to see how it was going to end. Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of the author's writing style. The dialogue seemed to stilted and unnatural, and a lot of the writing was superficial. Also, I thought a lot of the circumstances were unrealistic, such as Chad telling all these people he didn't know that well about his criminal history. It kept me interested enough, but I won't be reading more of the series.
review 2: I gave this book a 2 because I felt while there was potential, there could have been a lot more depth. Pretty early on I figured out the outcome and it just didn't have enough twists, turns to make it a quality read for me. Rather than the detectives lives and Hank being... more interested in Amelia, I would have preferred more information about Jeremy's parents, why the father did what he did and did the mother really hang herself or could Jeremy have killed her? I didn't like where the insert regarding the elements & Jeremy's past that prompted him to feel the need to eliminate thieves & criminals occurred. I would have preferred it earlier and a little more danger with the abduction. I never once thought he would kill her and he felt bad for losing his temper & beating her up. There was way too much busy detail that went nowhere. Two pages were spent on a park picnic that detailed the location, food, activities & then went nowhere, with no significance.Suppose Mattie came across footprints that Annie recognized; that would have justified all that detail for me. It was too descriptive throughout & I felt that 50-60 pages could have been omitted without losing content. While my review sounds harsh, I will read more of this author's books as I think he has really good ideas and can channel those into a first rate novel. less
