review 1: I so appreciate RC teaching of the Lord and this topic. Love ...it is so misunderstood. Love can mean different things to all of us. Love to us can be affirmation, gifts, service, physical and however, with affirmation, gifts, etc. God loves us thru his holiness. God is the source of the true definition of love. We can twist love when we become the source of what love is. In this study, I can see how I have done that without realizing how easy it is to do. Our union with Christ is the start of that source and it continues as we abide in Christ. The sovereignty of God plays heavily in our understanding of the love of God that it frees us to love others with true purity of heart. The sovereignty of God makes it about who God is and not about us. That in itself ... morecan take a lifetime to grasp and understand and is never boring. I think it is because there is a wonder, an awe of the sovereignty of God that softens our hard hearts. RC goes into the depth of how God loved Jacob and hated Easu. Reading that can cause some to question God's love but when you go deeper, you actually see God's sovereignty and God's grace. It would be not grace if we deserved it. Reading this book, I am reminded that the bible shows the condition of this weary broken heart.
review 2: **I received this as an eBook from the kind people of David C. Cook through NetGalley**A comprehensive look into the LOVE of God. In essence the message is that God is the source of TRUE love, just as Jesus is the source of Truth. The first few chapters are full to the brim with noteworthy observations, "love is an ACTION, not a feeling. Therefore Love comes from BEING". The constant reminder of the fact that God is made of Good, not evil, that He is not even capable of evil, is reassuring and encouraging. (Good tree(s) cannot bear bad fruit" Matt 7:15-20.Sproul brings across the notion that we are adopted through Christ by God, and that while the world has failed us and left us spiritually cripped, God is welcoming us in LOVE because of Christ. While I took a lot away from this book, I felt that it slowed down towards the end. I wasn't as invented in the taking of notes, I felt the majority of what I needed from this book (in terms of how God loves me and WHY) were mentioned within the first hundred pages.I have read other books that talk of the virtue of Hesed, Sproul covered the concept with beautiful imagery and in everyday terms whilst also not straying far from original scripture and God's message. All in all, I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is seeking to further understand God's Love. While it is scholarly in places, it was an enjoyable read and I am looking forward to reading more of Sproul's work. less

Sproul says this is the most intimidating topic he's ever dealt with.
