review 1: Where to turn when you have no oneThis may be the second story in the Hyena Heat series but it is still a self-contained story. This story got me thinking about all the shifter books I've read and that this is the first one to have an official agency to help batter and abused spouses. When the Alpha condones the abuse who can you go to? I love that in this series there is help but not everyone know about it. This story is of one such woman that is saved and it is now up to the three hyena brothers to help the woman which also happens to be there mate. And an Ex and her old Alpha that won’t give up on finding her. Well written and very enjoyable to read. I won a copy of this book from the author.
review 2: 3.5-4 starsThis was a pretty good story. I liked
... moreSydney and felt for her and the situation she was in. Orion, Crux, and Sterling are good guys and it's easy to root for them.Sydney is a were-wolf and a really sweet girl but she had a very bad life. She grew up with a Mother that never wanted her and treated her like crap. She lived a crappy life but looked forward to getting out from under her Mom as soon as she hit 18. She shouldn't have waited because her Mom ends up sending her in to a hell that lasts for 6 years (wont go in to the details but it's a really bad life). When Sydney gets a chance to escape she takes it and ends up running straight in to the arms of Orion, Crux, and Sterling.Orion, Crux, and Sterling are brothers and were-hyenas. Their kind mate with 3 brothers to one woman. Each trio has their own area of responsibility, Orion is the leader and makes most decisions, Crux is the homemaker and tends to take care of the household duties, and Sterling is the protector of the group, he has the biggest body (physically the strongest of the 3) and sees to the security of the den (their home). They're really good guys and get called in to pick up Sydney by a were relocation group that helps abused weres. When they meet Sydney they know she's their true mate but also know that after all she went through she'll need time to heal.Despite an initial incident between Sydney and the guys things are pretty hands off while she settles in. The guys don't want to tell her that she's their mate because their afraid to pressure her. She wants them but doesn't think they want her..because if she was their mate they'd have told her right? Fortunately this doesn't last too long and it comes out that they're mates. Sydney, having had around a month to get used to being free is ready to grab on to whatever happiness she can get and is happy to be their mate and get on with her life. There does end up being a bit of an issue with that when some of her former captors come after her. There's some drama but the danger is neutralized and all turns out good. After the drama is over we get to see Sydney and the guys settle in together and have some happy news to start their mating on. I enjoyed that the action drama was out of the way somewhat early in the story. It was actually kind of nice to see the last part of the book just being a HEA (and not a happy ending that's almost interrupted by a last minute danger and then the HEA). The secondary characters were cool (mostly the foursome from book #1 and a trio of cousins that haven't found their mate yet)...although I didn't read book #1 so I wasn't as invested in them as others that have read book #1 might be. Overall I enjoyed this story. It was pretty good and while it had some disturbing subject matter it wasn't what I'd call a "dark read". Sydney is so sweet and I was really happy for her and her men and the story ended with a sweet and happy vibe. :D less
