‘Everything Leads To You’ spoiler review

For those who read my Try-A-Chapter post, you’ll know this was the only book I kept. The first chapter hooked me especially since it ended on a cliff hanger. I honestly don’t regret reading this book and I’m glad this is the one I kept.

Everything Leads To You by Nina LaCour was a huge surprise for me. It was one of the books I didn’t think I was going to keep. However, I’m glad I did decide to keep it and gave it a chance. Although a relatively short book, it had a powerful message and it made me think.

As usual, I’ll talk about what I didn’t like about the book. I didn’t actually have many issues with the novel. It was a pretty good novel especially with the characters, the plot and the writing style. The main issue I had was the pacing of the book. At times, it felt like the book was dragging on about one thing for way too long. Maybe LaCour was just being extra descriptive, but I think I had a similar complaint to We Are Okay.

Now onto what I liked about the book. I actually loved all the characters except Tracey but that was an obvious dislike. Emi and Charlotte were two talented and well-meaning girls who wanted to solve a mystery and do something epic. Emi was a little bit naive but still a likable character. Charlotte was probably the best character in the story because she actually called people out and said what they needed to hear. She didn’t do it rudely though, but just a simple nudge to help them.

Ava was such a lovely character who wasn’t without fault, though. At first, she seemed a little bit too manic pixie dream girl but she grew on me. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the choices she made, but I could see why LaCour chose them for her. I also loved Jamal who was more of a side character, but such a relatable one and another character who told others what they needed to hear. While Emi’s parents reminded me a little of the dad from Get Out, they seemed like sweet and nice people.

Besides the slow pacing at the beginning, the plot was amazing. There weren’t any plot holes or questions left unanswered. There was a lot of commentary on filmmaking, relationships, who your family is and becoming your own person. The book had a few romantic moments, but it wasn’t the prominent feature of the book.

The book was basically us getting to know the characters and watching them grow. The amount of character growth was incredible, especially for Ava.

The one thing everyone else loves and I did too, was the setting. It was in Hollywood and everything felt glamorous. There was also a few places that weren’t so glamorous, but it helped keep the book more grounded in reality. Everything Leads To You was such a surprising read for me and one I would recommend.

I gave Everything Leads To You 4.5 out of 5 stars.
