review 1: Every now and then I hear people asking, where is steampunk going and is everything that the genre has to offer already done. Apparently, no. Judging by the cover, I thought the book was going to be some showy, pretty, gadget-y story with old-fashioned circus atmosphere for spice. (I could live with that. I'm a sucker for freakshows and the old-fashioned circus.) Instead, Mechanique was something completely different. It is a deeply poetic, beautiful and terrifying tale, and still inherently steampunk. Loved it.
review 2: What a fantastic read- the writing is just amazing and almost poetic. Fantastic story classified as Steampunk but really only the mechanical parts of the performers push it into that genre. It is more fantasy and bit dystopian in it's back s
... moretory and present. Story takes place in a pretty bleak future where group have people managed to survive by putting on a mechanical circus. I'll leave it at that as the story unfolds really well and quite frankly not for everyone unless you like this sort of read. If you liked The Night Circus you'll probably appreciate Mechanique. less
