“A Name Unknown” by Roseanna M. White

Shadows Over England – Book 1

Rosemary Gresham is a librarian. No wait, she’s not. She’s a thief.

Peter Holstein is a loyal English subject. Or is he?

A mysterious Mr. V hires Rosemary Gresham, thief and impostor, to prove that Peter Holstein is indeed a German sympathizer in name and deed.

Peter Holstein hires Rosemary Gresham, the librarian, to prove that his name is the only German thing about him.

And, all around Peter and Rosemary, the first world war is mounting in Europe, bricks are being thrown through windows, and… there’s a growing attraction between the librarian and the master of the house.

Shaking his head, Prince Edward picked up his pace. “Sometimes, man, you baffle me. A pretty girl you obviously fancy, and she’s only your friend? And librarian?”

“I’m not…you know I’m not…the type to…to…”

The prince laughed again. “You can’t even talk about it without blushing. What of marriage, then? Aren’t you the type for that?”

Miss Gresham leaned close. “Tell me what it is you do all day at that typewriter.”

His lips pulled up. Crooking his finger to motion her closer, he bent over, hand cupped, mouth at her ear. And whispered, “I type.”

  • What I Loved

Roseanna M. White. This author never ceases to amaze me. After finishing one of her books, I am always sleep deprived, constantly amazed at the power of her writing, and convinced that life as I knew it is gone. Forever.

Peter Holstein. Convinced at the beginning, like Rosemary, that he was not my type, by the end of the book… I might just have been in love too. I don’t even know when Peter, who seemed somewhat anti-heroish; absentminded, unable to find words or calm his stutter in the presence of strangers, suddenly, grew into the main character I  respected and loved. For his honesty, his integrity, and his heart for God.

That kiss. Read the book, you’ll know which one. I don’t know if there’s any way to top that.

The amazing way the Truth of Salvation was written in. Seamlessly, and non-preachy.

A soft chuckle, warm as tea. “No, child. Master Peter’s no better than the rest of us. Not on his own.”

[…]

“You know it too. He’s been writing to you, so he’ll have explained it. He can’t write without explaining it — that it isn’t him. The faults, the absentmindedness — those are him. The goodness… that’s the love of Christ.”

“He needed her to stay. He needed to hear her opinions, her exasperations. He needed her to point out where his thinking wasn’t deep enough, the things he’d forgotten to question.

He needed her.”

Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels that span several continents and thousands of years. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to find their way into her books…to offset her real life, which is blessedly ordinary.

Being educated at St. John’s College (the Great Books School) taught Roseanna to ask questions, to value conversation, and to never accept the simple answer without exploring it for herself. She and her family make their home in the mountains of West Virginia where she and her husband both grew up. Roseanna is a member of ACFW, a frequent speaker at writers events and small groups of readers, and an unabashed email addict.
