I have a small confession to make.
I’ve been a bit of a procrastinator.
I actually finished this book over a week ago and I’ve been sitting on it ever since. Because…I just don’t know what to say. In fact, the only thing that’s making em write this post is that I promised to write a honest review of any and all books that I read. That and the fact that I’m almost finished with my next one and I really don’t think putting these two books in one post will make sense.
Alright, here goes:
There’s not really anything wrong with this book if I’m being honest about it. It’s a sweet story, with a touch of magic. It’s definitely a good choice for days when you don’t want to think. But that’s also sort of the problem, there’s no depth.
The story is about a young girl, Emily, who comes to stay with her grandfather in a tiny North Carolina town that has the tallest man in the world, people with the ability to sense sweets, and wallpaper that changes on its own. Oh, and of course, there’s a cute boy with a very big secret.
So, I mean…it’s a good story, but it seemed a bit young, a bit shallow, and ultimately it felt like Allen was trying to cram too much stuff into the story. There were way too many things that never got explained, like why does the wallpaper change? Why does the cute boy’s family have that particular secret, how did it happen? And the parts that did get explained, like what happened to Emily’s mom, just seemed a bit…anticlimactic, too simple of an explanation.
So, my determination…cute story but that’s about it. Good for an easy read but not very thought-provoking. But perhaps you’ll have another opinion.
