Synopsis:
First zit. First crush. First…mermaid’s tail?
If she hadn’t been so clueless, she might have seen it coming. But really, who expects to get into a relaxing bathtub after a stressful day of shopping for tankinis and come out with scales and a tail?
Most. Embarassing. Moment. Ever.
Jade soon discovers she inherited her mermaid tendencies from her mom. But this revelation raises a serious question: if Mom was a mermaid, how did she drown?
Jade is determined to find out. But how does a plus-sized, aqua-phobic, mer-girl go about doing that, exactly? And how will Jade ever be able to explain her secret to her best friend Cori, and her crush, Luke?
This summer is about to get a lot more interesting…
My ThoughtsI don’t usually have a lot of success these days with middle grade books, but since I was going for more Canadian titles, I saw this one on one of my reading lists. I remember adding it because it just looked really cute and since it was middle grade, it was probably a quick read. Since my library had the audiobook for the first book I thought I’d give it a go — and I loved it so much!
Right off the bat, this book cracked me up. I was laughing out loud in the car as I listened and I’m sure people thought I was crazy, but while this book is definitely about growing up, it talks about it in such a humorous way that I don’t think you can read it without laughing. Or you’re a rock or some other inanimate object. Seriously! My plan had been to listen to this over a few days, but I just couldn’t stop, it was that good. I loved Jade and her dad and how they bonded over Jade’s womanly problems, and then her other womanly problems – that is, becoming a mermaid.
On top of all that, though, there’s also the mystery of her mother and it added so much to the story. Even though Jade is turning into a mermaid, this book doesn’t come across as a paranormal-type book – it’s more of a contemporary, with mermaids. I’m so excited to continue with this series and see what happens with Jade and her family and friends. It should be so much fun!
Audiobook Thoughts
I loved Jen’s narration of this story – she really brought life to the whole story and told it in a way that really got the humour across and didn’t make it boring to listen to. I hope she narrates the rest of the books, too! The only thing I didn’t like was that Jade’s best friend sounded like she smoked three packs a day, but that’s minor. I’ll definitely be checking out more titles narrated by Jen!
But don’t take my word for it … read some other reviews!
