A Christmas Carol: A Review

A Christmas Carol, adapted by Jennifer Adams & Alison Oliver, 2012

This won’t be my first Christmas, but I’ve only celebrated one and my memories of it are foggy… like the mists of Christmases past experienced by Ebenezer Scrooge.

Jennifer Adams’ interpretation of A Christmas Carol is a colour primer that includes some of the major plot points of Charles Dickens’ story. Unfortunately, we miss the redemption moment, which gives the original tale meaning, depth, and humanity. While I recognize it’s not popular to identify with Scrooge from the beginning, I find people tedious at times and I also dislike nephew Fred’s excessive good cheer.

Thank goodness, like Dickens’ novella, this short adaptation wasn’t published as a serial, because the author would’ve made mere tuppence.

Marley may have been dead to begin with, but I’m not dead tired of this book.

The true spirit of Christmas is giving… this book to all the babies.
