review 1: This isn't exactly a middle school version of "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" but it's close. As a Beatles fan, I particularly enjoyed the references to Paul McCartney, Wings, Queen, and the Beatles, though I'm not sure if middle schoolers will find them as engaging. However, the characters and plot of this novel are both very compelling and there is a real emotional depth to it. I'd highly recommend it for middle school libraries. There are some references to sex/masturbation and some language.
review 2: I really liked this one and the connection to the Beatles and Wings made it all the better. It was a little longer than I typically like for a young adult novel but it held my interest throughout. Set in the 70's, it is the story of a Na
... moretive student attending school off-reservation. He is placed in a high-achieving "track" and struggles to find his niche. He struggles with making friends, attacks from a bully and his home environment, to name a few. His love of the Beatles and other music of the day allows him to connect to others. Considering this one a a novel study with 7th graders. less
