On 16 January 1988, Tina Turner, the Lioness of Rock, performed in front of a record-breaking crowd in Rio de Janeiro. Accompanied by a stunning line-up of musicians, samba dancers, glitter and fireworks, Tina delivers 13 tracks in her own inimitable and explosive style. During the Break Every Rule Tour TINA performed in South America for the first time. It was in January of ’88, and TINA made history (and the Guinness Book of World Records) when she performed to a crowd of 180,000 people at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. It was the biggest paying audience for a single artist ever; it surpassed Frank Sinatra’s record set eight years before at the same soccer stadium.
The concert was broadcasted live in several countries and was of course issued as a VHS at the time. Unfortunately, some songs from the original setlist are missing in this release. The tracks Show Some Respect and It’s Only Love have been broadcasted in a TV special in South America and the video footage of the encore song Nutbush City Limits was used for the music video of the first German single from the album Live In Europe. Rio ’88 was released in 1988 on the eagle / Polygram label on VHS, LaserDisc and Video-CD and was reissued in 2001 on DVD.
