_____________________________This story was almost a pain to read, and I have no idea how I managed to completely read it all. The idea was simply intriguing but certain elements was lacking; or severely lacking thereof.
What was intriguing to me was the idea of having a memory lost and waking up discovering that you have some unnatural power that made everyone terrified, and involving some kind of elite force. Sounds cool, right? Well, in a certain way, it wasn’t.
First was the main protagonist, Miranda. Her character itself was fine, but it was like she never lost her memory at all. The “doctors” and her group told them that once her memory was gone, there was no way for her to remember stuff. Throughout the entire story, the littlest details conjured every memory she ever had completely. If you had a character with a memory lost, and apparently all memories are gone with no recovery, wouldn’t you think it would have been a little harder for that person to fully regain memories? I only wished there was a couple of scenes that she tried to remember something, but could only remember very small pieces are couldn’t remember at all. She would fail to remember a couple of things. Instead, she just remembers everything.
Also, the skills she had before her memory lost. I understand that the most skills you possess can be stored in a different piece of a brain. (Correct me if I’m wrong.) Even someone with memory loss, their skills still be the same, or just a little different. Guess what, every skill she did, she done it flawlessly like nothing even happened. I would image there would be a little training to get used to things again, but everything she did showed she remembered everything. I just kept counting this as a major flaw in the story. It could be just an opinion, but that is just what I thought about it.
Next, the love triangle. I really wished that this wasn’t the main driving force behind the story, nor being even in the story at all. This girl just lost her memory and found out she had a boyfriend. Her reaction? “Oh, I don’t like you anymore. I like him now.” Of course this just had to happen. For some reason, it was best to forget the boyfriend she had and go for some new boy. Why couldn’t see try to work things out with him and past the half point realize that things may not work other than deciding right from the beginning? Play it with a little, then bring in this love triangle. I’m sure it would’ve created a better story.
Lastly, this story, in my opinion was just boring to me. As each scene happened in the story, I could easily tell what was going to happen, almost everything seemed predictable. There was a scene where something happens between two opposing views and I thought “Oh, this specific thing won’t happen, they’ll just do this instead,” and it happened almost right after. Nothing even excited me. There was some cool fighting scenes, but other than that, nothing fun. The fighting scenes were interesting to read, but it didn’t last as long as I would’ve hoped for.
I still don’t know how I managed to read through this book. When I had around thirty pages left, I skimmed through because I knew what was going to happened and I just wanted to get it done and over with. Like previously stated, I knew exactly what was going to happen and I was right.
This may have not been for me, but it was overall a cool idea to begin with. I’m sure this was please other readers more than me. The only praise I could give it is the overall idea and the cover. The cover is nice, only if they could’ve incorporated that snake in the story somehow. If it was in there, I somehow managed to miss it in the boring storyline.
