Beneath a Meth Moon is a relatively short and beautifully written novel about the horrors of meth addiction. I coincidentally decided to read the book at the same time that I was watching Breaking Bad. It’s 2 really different perspectives on meth addiction.
Laurel, the main character in Beneath a Meth Moon, has had her life torn apart by Hurricane Katrina. Her mom and grandmother died. Laurel, her younger brother and her father moved from Pass Christian to Jackson to Galilee. In Galilee, Laurel joined the cheerleading team where she met T-Boom. T-Boom was a start football player and, apparently, a meth cooker. He introduced Laurel to met. It was a spiralling descent into addiction and eventual homelessness. Laurel eventually got help, but it is definitely sad to read about how meth can ruin someone’s life.
I would have liked a longer book that went even more in depth about the character and her experience with meth addiction. But, still, I really liked Jacqueline Woodson’s more artistic approach. I think I’m going to read a few more books in this genre soon, so keep your eyes open for that if this is a genre / theme you would like to continue to explore in your reading too.
