When choosing June’s book of the month we decided to choose a fun summer read that would be perfect for the warm weather. Unfortunately, we live in Scotland so we don’t actually have warm weather, and our summers consist of non stop rain. Still, we were committed to picking the perfect summer book, and decided to go with One Perfect Summer by Paige Toon.

While on holiday in Dorset one summer, Alice meets Joe, a guy working at the local pub. She’s eighteen and on the brink of starting university, while Joe’s life is seemingly going nowhere. But despite their differences, the pair fall hopelessly and desperately in love. And then summer comes to an end and they are dramatically torn apart. Alice heads off to university in Cambridge where she gets a part-time job punting on the River Cam and slowly picks up the pieces of her broken heart. Kayleigh actually bought me this for my birthday back in February, and I’ve been waiting for a chance to read it. I’ve read two Paige Toon books before – one I loved and one I thought was okay – and enjoyed her writing. Her books tend to be very light-hearted and easy to read.
My first impression is that I’m going to enjoy the book, but I feel like I may end up frustrated with Alice and Joe. I love a good love triangle – but only when it’s done right. I hate being told who I should root for in a book, and from the blurb, it does sound like we’re meant to be Team Joe from the start. I think a love triangle only works when there are reasons to root for both person, and when you don’t know what the result of it will be. It’s just frustrating reading a book when you know how it’s going to finish from the very start. I’m hoping there will be some surprises in store! In one of the other Paige Toon books I read, there was a huge twist that I loved, so I’m optimistic that I’ll be proved wrong.
