The Last Policeman
review 1: Even though life as we know it is soon to change dramatically (will there even be any life left on the planet in 77 days), former police detective Hank Palace is still on the job. This time he's looking for a missing husband. Where did he go, why did he go, who did go with, did he leave of his own volition - or not? And why would Hank Palace spend his own end of days looking for a missing person? An intriguing story about the search set against the backdrop of the madness that engulfs the world as the end draws near. Can't wait to read the last book in this trilogy!!
review 2: Second installment of an inspired series - apocalyptic fiction meets detective novel. I liked this one less than the first - perhaps I needed to read it in one or two sittings rather than
... more over the week, but I found the plot confusing, with half-drawn characters that seemed to reappear after long absences. I did think the apocalyptic vision worked well here, though, with the protagonist growing ever more dogged in solving a mildly pointless mystery even as the world around him collapses. The details of that collapse are well drawn, though, and the mood of the book cast a long shadow. I'll probably tune in for the final installment, though I might just skim it to see if the asteroid does in fact hit. less
