Title: 36 Questions That Changed My Mind About You
Author: Vicki Grant
My Rating: 3 stars
Goodreads. Book Depository.
This book was a cute contemporary read, based off a psychological study that questions whether love can be developed through a series of questions. With interesting characters it was a cutesy read and quite enjoyable – a very quick and easy read!
I received this book in a giveaway from Allen & Unwin in exchange for an honest review.
Synopsis:
Inspired by the real psychology study popularized by the New York Times and its “Modern Love” column, this contemporary YA is perfect for fans of Eleanor and Park.
Hildy and Paul each have their own reasons for joining the university psychology study that asks the simple question: Can love be engineered?
The study consists of 36 questions, ranging from “What is your most terrible memory?” to “When did you last sing to yourself?” By the time Hildy and Paul have made it to the end of the questionnaire, they’ve laughed and cried and lied and thrown things and run away and come back and driven each other almost crazy. They’ve also each discovered the painful secret the other was trying so hard to hide. But have they fallen in love?
Told in the language of modern romance—texting, Q&A, IM—and punctuated by Paul’s sketches, this clever high-concept YA is full of humor and heart. As soon as you’ve finished reading, you’ll be searching for your own stranger to ask the 36 questions. Maybe you’ll even fall in love.
My Thoughts:
This cute contemporary book was a really quick read following two people who decided to participate in a study to see whether a relationship can be built by asking 36 questions. I’ve found this study really interesting and think it’s a really intuitive thought about relationships. While I don’t believe in love at first sight, I believe that by getting to know someone better, you can build a foundation for a relationship to be built upon. While it’s not fullproof, it definitely makes for some good relationships!
Paul and Hildy are two people from very different backgrounds who come together for this study. After a rocky start, they chat to each other and commit to finishing the study, both for different reasons. In the book, drawings are included however my ARC didn’t have those so I had to do a bit of guesswork – I’m sure in the actual book they add a lot to the story. As they get to know each other, their lives are revealed slowly and while they might not be well suited, they sure do make for an entertaining couple.
There’s a lot packed into this novel, with family backgrounds being revealed, healing being a key aspect and funny humorous parts. It was very cute to see them get closer together and become friends and then become a bit more. Not the most perfect relationship, as there are still a lot of questions about the two of them, but I felt happy-ish when I finished as it was very cute and enjoyable. It didn’t have a whole lot of plot to it, but was good nonetheless.
I’d say if you are needing a quick read, and wanting something light and fluffy, this would be perfect. Don’t go into it with big expectations, just go into it with an expectation for a cute story.
Recommended for: young adult contemporary lovers will enjoy this book, it’s very cute!
Quotes (Spoiler Free):
“Ever feel like a complete screw up?”
“Yeah. Daily. But I also shit daily. In both cases, I flush, wash my hands, and blame the stink on the next guy.”
Buy it here.
While this book doesn’t tick all the boxes, it ticks some and that’s all that matters.
What’s the cutest book you’ve ever read?
Love,
Maddy xx
