review 1: I'm a hardcore Ellroy fan, so it's painful to admit, despite all his lush prose, that, apart from Dick Contino's Blues/Hollywood Nocturnes, this is his worst book to date. He toned down all the marvellous staccato-style from the previous installments of the Underworld USA trilogy, introduced his most unlikable anti-hero yet, Don Crutchfield, an obvious alter-ego (peeper, voyeur, in search of his long-lost mother - come on!!) and made us endure his stay until the very end, managed to dispose of all his best characters and, at the book's excruciantingly messy last third, just threw sense, logic, reason and whatever held this threadbare plot together to the wind. The hours I spent reading this: I want them back.

... moreed it up because it was on a "best of" list, apparently forgetting how much I detested his writing style in the first book of this series. Short sentences annoyed me (I'm pretty sure the average of five or six words a sentence is fair) as did short sections; is it possible this book was written for those afflicted with adhd? The jargon was ridiculous. Violence and sex were spread rampantly throughout the part I managed to read, needlessly and for shock effect I'm assuming. Ugh. Why do people like this book so much? less
