review 1: A really good little sci-fi story.Jacqs has always identified as heterosexual, but a new addition to the ship means he's rethinking that stance. Jacqs is blunt, honest and straight forward, he doesn't run from a fight or a problem, even when it's just in his head. So faced with an attraction to another man he doesn't hide he confronts it head on.I really, really enjoyed this. I'd love to seem more with these characters and universe. It was intriguing without being confusing and had some good world building. It looks like there's an expanded version available from loose-id and I'll definitely be checking that out.
review 2: I wanted to like this. I read the first couple chapters when they were posted on the author's journal and enjoyed them. I'm a fan of Firefly
... moreand found that Jacqs was relatively recognizable as Jayne Cobb. Maybe that's where things went wrong. Jacqs was Jayne but not, this was a sci-fi setting on board a spaceship, but this wasn't Firefly. I think I had expectations for things that weren't there. I'm also not sure why, but I didn't realize that Zeke was supposed to be the love interest until a couple chapters after his intro. What really killed this story for me though was all the talk of sexuality and the obsession with labels. It just made things drag. less
