Thank you to the author and publisher for a complementary copy of this book. This was a first edition.
Though this is the first in the House of Night Other World series, it is actually a follow up series to the original House of Night books. Before this book begins there is a marvelous recap section complete with backstory and the cast of characters backgrounds.
Since this was the second series involving these characters and this world (Vampyre school intermixed with modern day America…), I spent the first 100 or so pages (the first third of the book) desperately wishing I’d read the 12 books (and 4 novellas) of the first series. But by page 110, I finally felt like I had a handle on the characters and the current storyline.
The last 200 pages are like a wild roller coaster ride and I didn’t want to put the book down. I still wished I knew more backstory, but that didn’t keep me from plowing ahead. At the end, I even broke my rule and read the teaser for the next release in 2018 “Lost”. I also enjoyed the Q&A with the authors and will be looking into their other writing as well.
