review 1: Gerbrand Bakker is a Dutch author that I can recommend to anyone. Set in a language almost as crisp as the skies over Waterland that he describes in such loving detail, I just loved the minute detail in the description of the actions and thoughts of the protagonist, and the deliberate slow pace at which he reveals the pains of the twin brother who was left behind with only half a body. A memorable reading experience.
review 2: Ik begon dit boek pas echt mooi te vinden lang nadat ik het gelezen en herlezen had. Hoe meer je over het boek nadenkt, hoe beter het wordt en hoe meer je ziet hoe briljant dit boek is. Gerbrand gebruikt niet meer woorden dan nodig zijn en de sfeer die hij oproept geeft precies de kilte weer die de polder vaak kan uitstralen. Die wringend... moree, kille Westfriese kilte die alle woorden bedekt en alleen het zwijgen overlaat. less
