Book Review: Girl Online by Zoe Sugg

First and foremost, happy new year! It’s been a while since I’ve posted a blogpost so I decided to have my first one in 2018 be a book review. One of my new years resolutions is to read at least one book a month and now that I’ve said it on the internet I might have to do it. Or not.

Girl Online is the first novel by Youtuber Zoella. On her main channel you can find fashion, beauty and lifestyle inspired vlogs and her 12 million plus fans are loving every minute of it.

The first thing I thought of when reading Girl Online was “Gossip Girl” – the tv-series. The protagonist Penny decides to secretly blog about her life. Almost the same as the “Gossip Girl” blogging about the drama surrounding them.

Penny is really the ‘typical’ outcast. Clumsy, no backbone, and really into the hot guy that every girls wants to be with. Ollie – said hot guy is again your ‘typical’ pretty boy. He uses people to get what he wants (what would benefit him) and Megan again your ‘typical’ mean girl.

I enjoyed the first half of the book but then it kind of felt like the story was at a standstill when Noah came into the picture. It was also very predictable and just boring to read. I did enjoy the end chapters and didn’t think they were too bad.

I don’t know why Zoella got “hate” for being a Youtuber with a book deal. That’s just ridiculous to me, or that she had a ghostwriter. Why would that matter? You enjoyed the book or you didn’t, it’s really that simple. I think we as a society complicate things a whole lot more that what they need to be.

I would rate the book ⭐️ ⭐️ /5. I enjoyed the beginning and end chapters but did not enjoy the middle of the book. I skipped over a few pages and it wasn’t a book that had my full attention from start to finish. Would I purchase the second and third book? Probably not.
