review 1: Enhhhnnnnn. This next instalment in my post-Avengers superhero craze was... OK, but I definitely didn't find it rave-worthy. But compared to X-23: the Killing Dream that I read last week (hell, compared to much of the fanfic on the LiveJournal Avengerkink community), the characterisation didn't do much for me, and the plot really seemed like little more than an excuse to put as many epic superhero battles together as possible. Dare I say it... while I have no hesitation calling X23:TKD a graphic novel, this felt very much like a comicOn the plus side, I mostly liked - and sometimes loved - the artwork. Granted, it featured a crazy amount of breasts (and Dark!Ms.Marvel, what's with the whole bare butt thing?) But Mr Deodato does draw facial expressions well, and someti... moremes it was those, rather than the writing, that carried a given scene for me - unusual for someone as non-visual as I usually am.So. I'm not sure if I have the second instalment on my holds list right now. If so, I'll probably read it, if only to see where the plot arc goes from here. If not though? I don't think I'll miss anything by not going forward with this storyline.
review 2: I forgot how annoying Bendis can be on team books. Or with villains. Or in general.Still, this is a great read, with tones of action and character moments. The idea is such an evil one you have to love it, even if you can't wait to see the characters get their heads kicked in. The art is just gorgeous and makes this book so enjoyable.Bendis, on the other hand, writes dialogue that makes me want to beat my head into a wall. Not all the time, but when he writes a team book, it just shows up more often than not. The "..." and "um" use goes on to the point of insanity. But when you have a character like Norman Osborn and Venom using those tics, it's just ridiculous. Either way, it's still good and great to look at, even if the characters talk like a teenager in a mall. less
