Book Review: Nina is not Ok

Title: Nina is not Ok

Author: Shappi Khorsandi

My rating: 5/5

Release date: 9th February 2017

Publisher: Ebury press

Goodreads synopsis:

Nina does not have a drinking problem. She likes a drink, sure. But what 17-year-old doesn’t?

Nina’s mum isn’t so sure. But she’s busy with her new husband and five year old Katie. And Nina’s almost an adult after all.

And if Nina sometimes wakes up with little memory of what happened the night before, then her friends are all too happy to fill in the blanks. Nina’s drunken exploits are the stuff of college legend.

But then one dark Sunday morning, even her friends can’t help piece together Saturday night. All Nina feels is a deep sense of shame, that something very bad has happened to her…

Review:

I finished this book yesterday (17th June 2017) and I absolutely loved it!

We first meet Nina when she is being kicked out of a nightclub and she is so drunk that she cannot stand up by herself. The story has quit a few blank spots when she is drunk so it allows us to understand the confusion that Nina is feeling when she has these blank spots.

Just a slight age warning as it does go into quite a lot of detail during sex scenes and it may not be appropriate for people under a certain age. It has some really diverse content as the main character is bi-sexual and her sister Katie has a physical disability (underdeveloped hand)

I think that no matter how old you are (as long as age appropriate) you will pick up something from this book. Shappi Khorsandi gives a raw, realistic and comedic view on alcoholism and the recovery that goes into it.

I have already given it to my friend so she can read it and I will have someone to talk about it with. I could not give this book enough recommendations and I really think that whether you are a reader or not you will gain something from this book. As the book is quite short (352 pages) it does not take long to read it at all. I read this is in quite a few sittings as I was reading it in a class due to me completing all of my coursework.
