Book Review: The Killing Room by Richard Montanari

I finished this book about a week ago and have decided to write a review about it. This is my first book review and so I’d be happy to accept any tips from anyone. To anyone who wants to read this book, I’m sorry if there are any spoilers in this review!

I managed to pick this book up from a local charity shop for only 50p! I was drawn to the book because I thought it had an interesting name which made me want to find out more. This book falls under the crime/thriller genre – I generally enjoy these types of books so I was excited to read this. The blurb also provided us with promise, with bodies turning up gruesomly murdered in abandonded churches.

So about the book…

The reviews on the front of the book say “Relentlessly suspensful..hooks you instantly” and “Sacry good! You will leave the lights on long after reading this book”. These reviews made me quite excited to read the book, however I found myself rather disappointed.

I found the book quite hard to get into. I found it to have quite a slow start as the author was spending the first few chapters describing the main characters of the book. I know that this is an important part of building up characters but I did find it quite boring. I prefer quite fast paced books, and at the start I did not find this to be much of a page-turner.

I also found it hard to empathise, or even like any of the characters in the book. I did not find them very relateable and reading about them often bored me. Even when I started to enjoy the book a bit more, and still when I got to the end of the book I still did not feel anything for the characters in the book.

It wasn’t until the first murder occurred that I started to get into the book more. The author went into great detail about each of the murders in the book. It may be considered quite guesome for some, however I found that these details provided to be interesting and made the book more entertaining. Still, in between each of the murders where the detectives were investigating I found the book to be quite boring.

A positive in the book was that we gained persepctives from many different characters in the book. switching from Detective Kevin Byrne, Detective Jessican Balzano, a news reporter and the murderer theirself. This provided us with many different view points and managed to help build the plot greatly. I think this helped to make the book more enjoyable as I was excited to get back to certain characters stories to see what happened next.

Overall, I would give this book 3 out of 5 stars. Although I did eventually get into the book, it did take quite some time to start to enjoy the book and the characters.

If you would like to pick up this book, you can get it from eBay here, or from amazon here.
