Breath play: the restriction of one’s flow of oxygen to the brain
Blood choking: the restriction of blood, and thus oxygen, to one’s brain
Air choking: the restriction of one’s breath (more painful of the two) Note: you are preventing flow of oxygen to entire body, not just the brain. Keep that in mind.
- Also known as erotic asphyxiation
- A form of edge play
- The intention is to elicit a rush of adrenaline from the lack of oxygen which produces a sort of high that intensifies the scene
- Techniques include but are not limited to breath holding, nose pinching, pressure on a person’s chest, riding partner’s face, masks, hoods, gags, or pressure on throat cutting off trachea/carotid artery
- Pressure on throat cutting off trachea is what most people think of when they think of choking, but this method can be particularly dangerous because you can crush the windpipe since it is very fragile and inelastic and thus kill the person since their means of breathing was destroyed. This is why, in my opinion, air choking is more dangerous
- THERE IS NO SAFE WAY TO DO THIS! DO NOT DO THIS IS YOU DON’T HAVE EXPERIENCE! A staggering number of people are under informed about breath play. There is literally no way to do this that does not pose some threat or serious injury. Even the slightest thing gone wrong can cause lasting damage to the brain, spine, or heart (ex. cardiac arrest, brain damage from lack of oxygen, stroke,). Some people think that as long as the person doesn’t lose consciousness then it’s fine, but that’s false. Cardiac arrest can happen with no warning before the loss of consciousness. Every year hundreds of people who think they know what they’re doing end up killed or killing their partner. The killer is usually arrested for manslaughter
- The safest method would be to restrict airflow by covering the mouth and nose. This is still edge play but there is less risk.
- -Don’t try to hold your breath. Its instinctive and helpful when someone is REALLY trying to kill you, but its counterproductive when playing. The sounds you make and the difficulty you have while trying to breath tells your Top just where you are in the scene. This is critical information, DO NOT WITHHOLD IT.
“Any form of breath play has some basic health risks. These risks depend on the age, and health of the slave/sub, it also depends on the specific type of breath play you are participating in. No list can be truly complete because of all the possible pre-existing conditions that may be present, but I believe this will give you some idea of the dangerous nature of breath play.
The list goes on and on; while this list only has the most dramatic possibilities they are still very real possibilities.
The cumulative damage from repeated breath play is still in question, researchers have experimented on a variety of animals but the information is still pretty sketchy. One fact is quite certain, reduced blood flow and in turn reduced oxygen to the brain kills brain cells. Once a brain cell is damaged it cannot be repaired or replaced, this is one of the few cells in the human body that does not regenerate.”
