The Great Migration: Journey to the North is an exceptional collection of poems and collage artwork that illustrate the experiences of African American families who courageously left behind everything they knew to create better lives for themselves. In the South, African Americans were experiencing poor economic conditions, extreme segregation, and an unsafe environment because the Ku Klux Klan was actively attacking their community. Millions of African Americans packed up and moved to the North to escape the terrifying environment they were living in. Their journeys to safety and a better life became known as The Great Migration. Crafted by individuals who personally experienced The Great Migration with their families, the poems share brave stories of determination, frustration, love, and hope.
