Just a quick word to praise Jessica Page Morrell’s guide to writing bad guys, Bullies, Bastards, & Bitches: How to Write the Bad Guys of Fiction. Her explanations do well in giving writers needed perspective and speculation into the dark characters we love to read and write about. But it’s not just a book giving writers advice on character building–it goes deep into the mental side of figures like sociopaths, monsters, female villains, and even anti-heroes. It provides a lot of examples from books and films in addition to giving advice about how to portray them, even bad guys for young readers.
Check it out and get your copy. This book is another weapon in my writer’s arsenal.
Wired.com, back in 2012, had a great article, “Why Do Supervillains Fascinate Us?“, taking a psychological look at our beloved fictional baddies.
Lastly, Geek & Sundry has a great video, “Out of Kiriosity: Why Do We Love Villains?” for your enjoyment below.
