Comic Book Review: Mind the Gap #2 By Jim McCann, Rodin Esquejo, & Dan McDaid

4 out of 5 Stars

I loved the first volume of McCann’s Mind the Gap series, so I had to pick up the next one right away to figure out what would happen next. So many questions left unanswered!

The Background

New threats arise as the curtains pull back to reveal some of the most shocking secrets surrounding the mystery behind the attack on Elle Peterssen. Meanwhile, what is her connection to a 10-year-old girl who claims to actually be Elle’s mind trapped in this girl’s body? All of this, plus the acclaimed silent issue “Speechless” and the unmasking that changes the entire series.

Collects Mind the Gap #6-10.

My Thoughts

Another great volume! It wasn’t quite as exciting as the first book, but readers definitely find more answers as Elle begins to piece together her past. And the blasted individual in the hoodie is finally revealed!

The pacing was a bit slow at first, but picked up in the later chapters, revealing bits and pieces of the mystery behind our main character’s strange attack. The mystery and revelations felt well-planned, showing an inter-connectedness that is often lacking across comic series. Readers can also begin to realize how much more there is to the story, leaving you eager to keep reading!

There are definitely some tear-jerking moments in this volume, such as the spirits of fellow comatose victims reaching out to Elle to comfort their families. Readers see more emotional interactions between Elle and Jo, as well as with Elle’s boyfriend. The writing and portrayal of these scenes is well done and realistic, despite the paranormal aspect of the scenes themselves.

One thing I was not super fond of in this volume was the choice to change artists for a particularly gruesome scene midway through the book. The art was an awesome noir style, inked in shades of blue and black, but much of the story was lost in the stylized panels. I couldn’t tell exactly what was going on at first and had to wait until the next chapter for a full explanation.

Overall, I give Mind the Gap (Volume 2) 4 out of 5 stars. If you’re looking for a beautifully rendered comic with a great plot, pick this one up!
