Dawn of the Arcana Vol. 1, by Rei Tōma | Manga Book Review #04

A medieval fantasy where a princess’s mysterious power alters her fate! Reads R to L (Japanese Style).

Princess Nakaba of Senan is forced to marry Prince Caesar of the enemy country Belquat, tantamount to becoming a hostage. While Caesar is pleasing to the eye, he is also selfish and possessive, telling Nakaba outright: “You are my property.” With only her attendant Loki at her side, Nakaba must find a way to cope with her hostile surroundings, her fake marriage…and a mysterious power!

I took a chance with reading Dawn of the Arcana, and I’m so glad that I did. In the past manga hasn’t been able to hold my interest for very long. With reading the Dawn of the Arcana though, I feel like everything was aligned since I blew through reading the story so quickly. I love the fantasy element to this manga. I really, really do. The art is interesting, as well as the storyline.

I liked getting to know the three main characters, Arcana, Loki, and Caesar and hope to learn more about everyone in the next volumes.

Arcana; we find out who exactly Arcana is in this novel, and how her life has been up until now. I particularly like that Arcana has some oomph to her.

Loki; who is a dog Ajin, who is fiercely loyal and more than likely in-love with Arcana.

Caesar; who as far as I can tell raised to be a bully, tolerates his older brother. Caesar doesn’t even want the throne.

The story starts off fairly quickly and right in the middle of a scene. Which was interesting to read if I’m honest. I enjoyed that we got to see how cruel dude-bro is, and that as far as we know only Arcana saw it. I’m glad though that Loki is around because if he wasn’t I’m sure that Arcana would have gone insane. I know I totally would have!

There’s definitely a backstory behind this main story that hasn’t truly been unfolded yet. There was a flash of the story briefly mentioned in the first or second chapter, but I’m curious about this sub-plot as well.

I look forward to getting my hands on a copy of the second book.

I gave Dawn of the Arcana, 4 of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Happy Reading!

Do you have any Manga books/novels that you would recommend to me? I’m up for reading pretty much anything.
