Crewel embroidery is a type of wool embroidery often stitched on linen fabric using a variety of stitches. In England it was particularly popular in the 1600’s and often called Jacobean embroidery. Flowers and other nature’s subjects are often depicted in a stylized form. I have collected examples of crewel embroidery in in Pinterest https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pirkkomaria/crewel/
Crewel embroidery found its way also to Scandinavia, where it influenced a vibrant wool embroidery tradition.
Choice of stitches and colours creates interesting and varying surfaces. Using a good needle and thin wool yarn, crewel is relatively easy to work. You just need to be careful with stitch tension, so use of an embroidery hoop is strongly recommended.
This blue cornflower embroidery was based on a bought kit, to which I added some flowers and leafs to fill in the design and add colour to the picture.
