review 1: This turned out not exactly as I expected it will. Until it got to where Khemri was chosen to be an Adjuster and did training without his augmentation, I thought it was going to be similar to Star-Wars. Spaceships, lasers and battles in space- in short what he thought was going to happen at the beginning. What I got instead, was a more character driven novel which really should have been expected since it is written in first person. I still enjoyed it however, it was interesting to see his character growth and still had enough happening to propel me along making this quite a page turner especially after his second death and the moments leading up to it. It was quite fun guessing when he would 'die' and be reborn, however, given that I got them correct except for the last o... morene I would say the book at times was a bit predictable. Another drawback was that we didn't find out much about the other Princes and by the end I wanted to find out more about them and the Empire itself, like 'how did it form?', 'have their been other Princes that disagreed with how the Empire was run?' And 'Is there a chance that in the future of Khemri's universe that there could be no need for Princes or at least make it voluntary given that the Emperor can do anything it wants before a new successor is chosen?' I can only hope that there will be supplementary material, if not a sequel that will help answer these questions as I think it will enhance the world-building already done in this good book to become a great one.
review 2: Khemri is a Prince in a futuristic universe where the human race has spread across galaxies and become well-versed in different teks. The Empire is ruled by Princes who, in turn, are ruled by the Emperor. Princes are endowed with special abilities, but Khemri is different and he is telling his story. Upon becoming a Prince, rather than Prince Candidate, Khemri faces almost immediate assassination attempts. His Master of Assassins leads him from the danger and escorts the Prince to a naval base where he may connect to the Imperial Mind and be recorded--and reborn if necessary. Khemri has been elevated at a unique and delicate time, only two years before the change of Emperor, and must learn that all he has been taught is nearly completely wrong. Learning to survive becomes Khemri's goal and, after much conflict, he does well as a Cadet at the naval academy. Upon graduation he is offered a position in a distant solar system where he discovers a secret society governing Princes. While following his dream, hoping to become the next Emperor, Khemri discovers how truly trapped Princes are--their very hopes and dreams are programmed into them to facilitate the continuation of the Empire and its systems of power. But Khemri also learns what it is to be human, and in his final moments he must make a choice--will he become what he has always wished to be, or will he become what he knows he is meant to be? A Confusion of Princes takes a hard look at what it means to be human and what creates humanity. Teens and young adults will enjoy its quick writing and open style while following the imagination that created such an expansive culture. less

Little heavy handed on the social commentary, but very well written, with excellent characters.

It was good world building. Not sure if I liked the ending. Read kind of like a video game.
