review 1: THE BLUE FOX reads like Hemingway crossed with a more recent Jayne Anne Phillips novel. Cut into three sections, the first is a series of precise beats following a hunter who tries to take down a fox. The middle section bursts forth with life and connectivity, loss, death, and reveals just who is the hunter we were first introduced to. The final section provides an excellent resolution, if one takes joy in reading about the suffering of a cruel and heartless man. I’d say more but don’t wish to spoil things. Read this if you love crisp sentences and want to see how a story can be told slightly out of order to great effect.
review 2: This was sort of an odd read. Notably, 2/3rds of most pages is blank, so the entire book amounts to maybe 50 pages at most. The
... more book is made up of a fable style story with a single flashback thats more straightforward and literary. You basically see a guy on a fox hunt and at the moment of climax you see how he got to that point. The story itself is fairly simple and a pleasant read. The writing is pretty interesting. It feels like magical realism, but is not expressly weighed down with normative history that often plagues magical realism. Sjon doesn't need normative history because the environments of the story are magical enough on their own. I wonder how someone living in Iceland reads it...Overall, a very pleasant read and I have to say I look forward to reading more of his work. less
